Objectives Of SON
Our resolve is to be a reference point in matters of standardisation,
quality and technical competence required to launch Nigerian products
into the competitive global market. This resolve is predicated on the
following objectives:
a. To provide industries with up-to-date information on standardisation,
its benefits and to encourage participation of the organised private sector
(OPS) in standardisation and review;
b. To ensure improved competitiveness of Nigerian goods at home and abroad
by encouraging quality assurance practices;
c. To provide information, advice and assistance to industries on quality
management for improved cost effectiveness;
d. The Organisation would ensure adequate technical support for our industries
as the reposition to match the quality required for competitiveness in
global trade and proper economic growth;
e. To motivate the workforce through steady investment in human resource
development for acquisition of skills in tune with technological advancement
To collaborate with regional and international organisations in the areas
of Metrology, Standards, Testing & Quality Assurance (MSTO) for enhancement
of skills and encouragement of free trade and building of capabilities.
Functions Of Son
The statutory functions of Standards Organisation of Nigeria by section
3, subsection (1) of 1971 Act No. 56 are as follows:
(a) to organise test and do everything necessary to ensure compliance
with standards designated and approved by the Council;
(b) to undertake investigations as necessary into the quality of facilities,
materials and products in Nigeria, and establish a quality assurance system
including certification of factories, products and laboratories;
(c) to ensure reference standards for calibration and verification of
measures and measuring instruments;
(d) to compile an inventory of products requiring standardisation;
(e) to compile Nigeria Industrial standards;
(f) to foster interest in the recommendation and maintenance of acceptable
standards by industry and the general public;
(g) to develop methods for testing of materials, supplies and equipment
including items purchased for use of departments of Government of the
Federation or State and Private establishments;
(h) register and regulate standard marks and specifications;
(i) to undertake preparation and distribution of standard samples;
(j) to establish and maintain such number of Laboratories or other institutions,
as may be necessary for the performance of its functions under this Act;
(k) to compile and publish general scientific or other data:
(i) resulting from performance of its functions under this Act, or
(ii) from other sources when such data are of importance to scientific
manufacturing interest or to the general public and are not available
else where;
(l) to advise departments of government of the Federation or States on
specific problems relating to standards;
(m) to sponsor such national and international conferences as it may consider
appropriate;
(n) to co-ordinate all activities relative to its functions throughout
Nigeria and to co-operate with corresponding national or international
organisations in such fields of activity as it considers necessary with
a view to securing uniformity in standards specifications and
(o) to undertake any other activity likely to assist in the performance
of the functions imposed on it under this Act.
(p) Organisation shall undertake such research as may be necessary for
the performance of its functions under this Act. And for that purpose
it shall have power to make use of research facilities, whether public
or private upon such terms and conditions as may be agreed upon between
the Organisation and the institution concerned.
