On 3 February 1931
the city of Napier was flattened by an earthquake. The devastation prompted
the Government to set up a national building code. In 1932, the New Zealand
Standards Institution, which later became Standards New Zealand, came
in to being to support the new building code.
Today Standards New
Zealand is the trading arm of the Standards Council, a crown entity operating
under the Standards Act 1988. The Standards Council, an appointed body
with representatives from a wide range of community sectors, is the governing
body for Standards NZ.
Standards
New Zealand
specialises in developing and marketing national, regional and international
Standards - offering an independent, efficient and cost-effective service
to a wide range of organisations. The majority of Standards are developed
in partnership with Standards Australia. And, as New Zealand's representative
in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Standards New Zealand ensures that
New Zealand's voice is heard worldwide.
New Zealand Standards
cover a wide variety of subjects and industries - Standards for health
and disabilities; business management; environment; and building, to name
a few.
Standards New Zealand has a full-time staff of 50 and is supported by
over 2000 New Zealanders who volunteer their time to serve on the many
and varied committees and boards.
Standards New Zealand is entirely self-funded; its revenues sourced from
contracts with industry and government agencies for the development of
Standards, and from the sales of Standards publications.
