NSAI facilitates the development of voluntary standard documents which manufacturers or service providers may use as an aid to meeting safety or customer requirements.
It is also a leading supplier of product and systems Certifications Services, both domestically and internationally, and is the provider of Legal Metrology services in Ireland. The NSAI has offices throughout Ireland and in the United States where its standards and certification services are provided on a commercial basis.
The NSAI represents the Irish interests in European and international Standards bodies - groups that work towards the harmonisation of standards and the removal of technical barriers to trade.
Standards
NSAI operates under the National Standards Authority of Ireland Act, 1996, on behalf of the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment for the publication of national standards. NSAI develops and publishes standards to meet international demands for quality, design, performance, safety and environmental impact of products and services. These standards are quoted extensively by specifiers in public and private purchasing requirements.

European Representation
NSAI is the Irish National Standards Body and has considerable experience in the production of European Standards (EN). Together with the standards bodies from the other countries of the European Union and the European Free Trade Association, it provides for national delegations to determine the technical requirements for a diversity of products and services including toys, pressure vessels, electrical and electronic products. building products and industrial machines. This work is carried out in the combined European standards system involving the Technical Committees of

International Standardization
NSAI participates in the work of World Standards Bodies, in particular ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical Commission). Participation in IEC is in conjunction with the ETCI (see below).
Electro-Technical Council of Ireland
The Electro-Technical Council of Ireland, ETCI, is a voluntary body of organisations representative of all aspects of electro-technology. The ETCI is recognised as the national electro-technical forum and the body in Ireland nominated to harmonise electrical standards under the EEC "Low Voltage Directive". It is the Irish Member of the International Electro-Technical Commission, IEC, and the European Committee for Electro-Technical Standardization, CENELEC. ETCI is sponsored by NSAI.
Certification:
NSAI certification is recognised world wide through a network of Mutual Recognition Agreements with other major certification bodies.
ISO 9000 has dominated the certification market in Ireland since it was first published in 1987 and it remains a major focus of activity. Indeed in recent years the standard has been tailored to meet the specific needs of different industry sectors including the Automotive Industry, the Aerospace Industry and the Telecommunications Industry and the NSAI provides certification in each of these areas.
As a Notified Body under the Active Implantable, In Vitro Diagnostic and Medical Devices Directives, NSAI provides particular expertise in the CE Marking of medical devices. Working with a world wide client base, NSAI has issued EC quality system certificates covering over 300 product families and in excess of 11,000 individual catalogue items.
NSAI is accredited for its certification services by the Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB) in the USA and by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC).
The Legal Metrology Service
The Legal Metrology Service (LMS) is a statutory body within the NSAI. Under the Metrology Acts 1980 to 1998 , it exercises regulation making and control functions with regard to measurements, in particular those made for the purpose of trade.
