EUROMET European Collaboration in Measurement Standards

EUROMET is a cooperative voluntary organisation between national metrology institutes (NMIs) in the EU and EFTA, including the European Commission. Established NMIs from other European states can also be members subject to the agreement of existing members. Currently, EUROMET has 34 members, with nearly every European state represented.
The objective of EUROMET is to promote the coordination of metrological activities and services with the purpose of achieving higher efficiency.
EUROMET was formally established by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) by participating States in Madrid, Spain on 23 September 1987 to become operative from 1 January 1988. Since then, the MOU was amended in 1995 and 1998.
Metrology, which is the science of measurement, plays a key role in industry, international trade and in everyday life. Accurate and reliable measurements are critical in assuring product quality, and in supporting environmental, health and safety issues. An accurate system of weights and measures is an essential pre-requisite for global and national economic activity, fair-trading, quality control and serves to protect the customer.
The main aims of EUROMET are to:
Encourage cooperation in the development of national standards and measuring methods
Optimise the use of resources and services
Improve measurement facilities and making them accessible to all members
Perform comparisons to ensure a better coherence of measurements.
To achieve these aims EUROMET works through eleven subjects fields in four types of collaboration.
