CEN,
the European Committee for Standardization, was founded in
1961 by the national standards bodies in the European Economic Community
and EFTA countries.
Now CEN is contributing to the objectives of the European Union and European
Economic Area with voluntary technical standards which promote free trade,
the safety of workers and consumers, interoperability of networks, environmental
protection, exploitation of research and development programmes, and public
procurement. CEN facilitates the development of
procedures for the mutual recognition of conformity test results to standards,
as well as for European systems of conformity assessment to standards.
CEN has developed three systems for conformity to European Standards:
- the CEN/CENELEC European Mark of
Conformity to European Standards, the Keymark
- the CENCER Mark
- European Standard Agreement Group (Mutual Recognition)
The CEN Certification Board is responsible for the CEN policies on certification
and other conformity assessment issues. The Board consists of delegates
from the CEN National Members, Associates and representatives from industry,
laboratories and inspection bodies and acts in an advisory role to the
Administrative Board of CEN.
The CEN Certification Board is presently developing a new system of conformity
to CEN Workshop Agreements (CWA) in addition to the three existing systems
of conformity to European Standards.
